As an entrepreneur in the beauty industry, I’ve found the most essential part about building your own business is to maintain your sense of self throughout the whole process. If you lose yourself along the way, you lose the purpose of your mission!
Creating a brand goes beyond the tangible aspects of formulations and business strategies; it’s a profound exploration of mental and emotional wellness. The relentless pursuit of success can take a toll on your mental and emotional well-being, making it crucial to prioritize self-care.
I liken my story to crafting the chapters of a book — and any good book is filled with great adventures. From moments of introspection and self-discovery to triumphs through resilience, remember that you’re the hero of your story!
If you’re a dreamer like me, longing to make your stamp on this world but grappling with challenges like self-doubt and not knowing where to start, keep reading. Today, I’m sharing seven valuable tips I’ve gathered over the years to help you build your dream brand — while staying true to yourself.
Introduction: A Multifaceted Odyssey
As a business owner, I’ve embodied a multitude of roles: artist, esthetician, formulator, creative director, videographer, photographer, operations manager, marketer, the list goes on…
I’ve always enjoyed wearing all the hats in my business. Every department has offered me a new skill, a piece of knowledge I could creatively apply somewhere else. This openness to curiosity is something I learned from my father at a young age, and I’ve carried it with me ever since. I truly enjoy seeing a project come to life from start to finish. When you take the time to fully understand each step of the process, the reward is so much sweeter.
Founder Tip: Being versatile is a strength. Even though there’s a lot of outside advice to find your niche, don’t pressure yourself to neatly define your brand, especially as you’re starting out. Give yourself permission to explore all the avenues of your craft, using your sense of wonder as your North Star! I’ve personally rebranded so many times, so don’t get too caught up in the little details in the beginning! You and your brand will evolve, and that’s a good thing.
Chapter 1: My Passion for Beauty and Artistry
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t have a deep-rooted passion for artistry. From my early years, I knew I wanted to create something beautiful with my life. This desire led me into the world of esthetics and fine art, eventually propelling me into an internationally recognized career in the beauty industry.
Founder Tip: Align your brand with what truly inspires you. Know that your hobbies and interests are not random; they’re pointing you towards your calling. This is the best way to discover a career path that’s fulfilling and sustainable in the long-run.
Chapter 2: Battling Toxic Standards
Despite my success, I found myself at odds with the beauty industry’s toxic fixation on flawless appearances. In fact, the more popular I grew, the more I began to lose myself in what people thought of me.
I shrunk myself — physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually — fueled by fears of never being “good enough.” Despite my public persona, I silently struggled with depression, anxiety, and addiction.
Founder Tip: When we cover up what we consider “flaws,” we block our connection to self and others. Instead, recognize that your humanity is a direct line to yourself and your audience. By embracing your vulnerabilities, you create space for belonging.
Chapter 3: The Journey Inward
I had to lose myself to find my true self again. When I hit my lowest of lows, I began to explore every holistic practice I could: breathwork, meditation, sound healing, and more.
Slowly, I cast aside the limiting beliefs I once held onto. I became reacquainted with who I was beneath those layers. What’s more, I redefined what “beauty” meant for me.
My personal adversities became the foundation of my brand’s message — a testament to the power of embracing your truth.
Founder Tip: Rising from personal struggles can forge an impactful message. As you shape your brand, think about the hurdles you’ve overcome, especially if they’re challenges your audience might be experiencing. This creates connection, community, and loyalty.
Chapter 4: Complexions by Jadé, a 180° Transformation
In 2019, I made a 180° transformation, realigning myself with my greatest passion — the skin. This marked the birth of Complexions by Jadé, a skincare series dedicated to my unique holistic-clinical approach to esthetics.
These educational episodes not only focused on skincare but also delved into mental health awareness and wellness practices that aided me on my personal evolution.
Founder Tip: Allow yourself to evolve your offerings that reflect your own growth. It’s natural to wonder how your audience or client base will react to these changes. Just remember that they are also going through their own transformations, and you might have exactly what they need at this point in their journeys.
Chapter 5: From Alchemy to Formulation
Returning to my love of alchemy, I discovered a deeper passion: formulating. In my home skincare studio, I crafted custom blends for select clients that met my professional standards of efficacy, sustainability, and holistic wellness. After having spent so much time in the digital realm, tapping into my creative expression in a hands-on way was just what my soul needed.
Founder Tip: Oftentimes, we feel the desire to create something new — before the idea has even taken shape. If you feel something stirring within you, and you don’t yet know what that product or service is, start by asking yourself what you wish existed. Odds are that someone else is wishing for that, too!
Chapter 6: The Birth of… Stay Tuned!
I’m getting ready to release my most exciting project yet, one that combines my 14 years as an esthetician with my personal learnings along the way. My hope is that this next chapter inspires a new movement in the field of esthetics: one rooted in the belief that mental health and skin health are deeply connected.
Founder Tip: As you navigate your personal and professional journey, trust that everything is working out as it’s meant to. During moments that seem confusing, unclear, or inconvenient, ground yourself in the knowledge that every part of your winding path is leading you to your purpose.
I believe that there is beauty at every age and stage of your life, and it starts with finding peace with who you are. When you do, whatever you choose to bring into the world mirrors your depth and expansiveness. There’s no better feeling than serving your audience from this authentic place.
As a creative spirit, becoming a founder is the most remarkable personal discovery journey I’ve ever experienced. It invited me to learn more deeply about myself on every level. Now, I can confidently say that I know precisely who I am, and my business is a reflection of who I’ve become!
Next, I pose this question to you: What chapter of your life’s story are you currently writing? Take a moment to reflect on where you are today and where you aspire to be tomorrow — and know that your truest self will get you there. I’m rooting for you.
With love and light,
Jadé Marie
